WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Normally there is a continuous formation and removal of a fluid called aqueous humour in he human eye. Sometimes, due to a blockage in the drainage channels, drainage of the fluid is reduced while formation continues. Hence the pressure within the eye increases. This is known as glaucoma. An increase in the eye pressure causes damage to the nerve of the eye and can lead to blindness. Some types of glaucoma can be treated with eye drops while others require surgery. Some may need both. POINTS TO NOTE REGARDING GLAUCOMA 1. There may be no visual symptoms - hence the patient may not realise that he has glaucoma until it becomes too late to save the eye. 2. Treatment of glaucoma is aimed at PRESERVING existing vision - whatever vision has been lost before treatment is started is permanently lost. 3. The best solution, therefore, is to have a regular check up, especially for patients above the age of 40, at which time the surgeon will check for glaucoma. |
